21st Century Girl Anthems
Vol. 23 | It's a woman's world, and we're tuning in
What’s sparklin’,
I’ve been seeing a lot of cool music content the past few months, and thought it’s too good not to share! So, I’m kicking off a new section called Disc-coveries, where I drop some of my newest obsessions that aren’t usually on people’s favourite streaming platforms.
It can be about anything, really. DJ remixes, unreleased song covers, new drops on Youtube – anything that floats with my vibe. Just bits and pieces of facts and music to keep your playlists fresh and your curiosity buzzing every week!
In other news, the world’s most famous girl day is around the corner, and I’ve been reflecting on how music has evolved in capturing the essence of a modern woman beyond just her nurturing qualities — confident, wise, and deserving of positions of influence.
From romantic ballads about waiting for Prince Charming to powerful anthems about reclaiming feminine strength and independence, music has a way of amplifying the voices of women that were previously unheard in history. Today, it empowers women to embrace their emotions wholeheartedly, speak their truth, and believe they can truly be whoever they want to be.
To everyone, thank you for celebrating and supporting the voices of women in music. And to my fellow ladies — while dainty pinks and soft themes may be the mood we’re traditionally associated with and enjoy being, our impact goes far beyond that. We create, inspire, and shape the sounds that move the world.
In celebration of International Women’s Day, I’m dropping curated femcore picks to listen with your fellow gal pals. Let’s honour the magic of girl power and its lasting influence on the world of music. 🩷✨
Keep slayin’,
Val ♫

In this week's setlist:
🔥 This DIVA is on FIRE
I grew up listening to the likes of Cranberries, Evanescence and Avril Lavigne, and I’ve always been fascinated at how their strong femininity shines through their music. They were among the early artists of the century who broke the mold of what “girly” music was supposed to sound like.

🥀 What Girlhood Feels Like
As a girl, experiencing the full depth and seasonality of emotions is both a strange and beautiful thing. In an increasingly progressive world, it’s more important than ever to embrace these feelings — to break generational cycles of silence and submission, honour the promise to go beyond our foremothers, and to live the lives they should have had the chance to.
Here are some songs that depict our raw, honest emotions of what it feels like to be a woman:
🎼 Lyric of the Week
After us, who would water the grapevines? Who would fill the baskets? Who would pick the grape leaves? After us, will the stars descend to play on the hills amidst the stillness of the night?
💡 This Week’s Disc-Coveries
Remember Lily Tucker-Pritchett from the sitcom Modern Family? Well, she’s now making a name for herself on social media under her real name, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, and she recently released her first song, a rendition of the viral hit Maps. Check it out here!
Also, did you know that Muni Long co-wrote one of Rihanna’s greatest heartbreak hits? I didn’t believe it myself, until I heard this cover of the original songwriter singing California King Bed. Just, wow.

🎶 New Music This Week
Driveway by Chloe Parché: I was first drawn to this song by its scrapbook-style, magazine-cutout cover art, but it was its road trip vibe that kept me listening.
SUPERSCAR by ADÉLA: Former KATSEYE trainee brings the heat in this dancey, unapologetic track. If I could describe the song in two words, I’d call it “dark” and “juicy”.
