It Takes Two to Tango

Volume 04 | Hearing Double?

Hi there,

Ever listened to a new song and thought, “Wait, I’ve heard of this before”? Or maybe your favorite artist drops a duplicate of their new song, featuring someone you’d never expect.

As unique as music has become, you’ll still stumble upon songs so alike, or other artists hopping onto the same song, and suddenly you’re hearing two of a kind.

Have a go at this week’s collection of duets, similar-sounding pairs, and everything in between. Your playlist will thank you twice 😉

Peace out,

Val

In This Week's Setlist:

🌏 East Meets West

With K-pop and Asian music making waves in the Western world, it seems like every major English-speaking artist is scrambling to team up with every Asian artist imaginable to keep up with the trends.

Just ask Megan Thee Stallion, who’s on a global collab streak with hits like Neva Play (featuring BTS’ RM) and Mamushi (featuring Yuki Chiba). And let’s not forget the recent smash hit APT., by Bruno Mars and ROSÉ.

Viral duets aside, here are some other underrated music crossovers:

👂 Echoing Melodies

Great minds think alike — and so do great composers. When people from similar creative circles make music, the songs turn out sounding like they’re cut from the same cloth, whether they’re copycats, originals or otherwise.

You’re going to hear double with these popular songs:

💚 Remixes are Brat

Charli XCX has just released a new version of her hit album Brat, cleverly titled Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat, featuring collaborations with artists from various genres across the industry.

Launching a club pop album into the mainstream is already a bold move, but creating entirely new songs with the most unlikely singers? Now, THAT is brat.

There’s no denying it, the clear winners for me are also probably everybody’s top favourites:

  • Sympathy is a knife featuring ariana grande: I admit, I overlooked this song on its own, but this version was an out-of-body experience. Easily made it to my top songs of 2024!

  • Talk talk featuring troye sivan: Troy’s opening was such a refreshing take, it’s like I’m listening to a faster, more upbeat version of “My My My”. Dance pop is so back.

  • Guess featuring billie eilish: This is probably Charli’s sexiest dance song to date. It’s also gender-friendly and attractive, especially with Billie’s breathy whispers.

🎶 New Music This Week

Old Habits by hongjoin and Marian Carmel: Have a thing for songs that feel like the start of a blossoming romance in a coming-of-age film? This duo’s vocals will take you right to that dreamy moment.

It Could Have Been Us by Christopher and Griff: Or maybe you’re in the mood for a song to reflect on a lost love? Here’s a heartbreaker for your next yearning session at your favourite spot.

Slow Motion by Matt Champion and JENNIE: Contrary to what the name suggests, the tempo feels like you're speeding through time, or rapidly rewinding to a time when everything about that relationship felt simpler.
