Reinventing New Melodies with Ole' Favourites

Vol. 29 | This week’s covers on repeat 🎤

How’s everybody doing,

Have you caught up with the Q1 mixtape yet? I know we’re onto Q2, but I’ve added some final few songs that I feel deserves a listen, before I wrap up the playlist. In any case, my playlists are all on my Spotify profile, go check them out ~

In other good news, we’re approaching another long weekend, and Boyce Avenue’s performing this Saturday! If you’ve got tickets, you’re in for a nostalgic cover night, but if you aren’t (like me), you can just tune in to Youtube and listen to their best covers.

And since it’s shaping up to be a weekend of a covers music trip, I’m dropping another episode of covers music from local and international artists you need to check out. With so many artists bring their own unique voice, you’re in for an unexpected ride.

Enjoy your long holiday weekend! 🎶

Your fellow music covers fanatic,

In this week's setlist:

🏝️ SEA Spins

I went to a couple of open jams recently, and the talent there is in the region is unreal. I’ll never get tired of discovering local and regional singers reimagining our favourite songs 🥰

I got around to diving into my vault of songs for the best covers from SEA artists, and here are my picks this week:

🎤 Cover Artists Spotlights

Ever since short-form video platforms took off, I’ve noticed a huge wave of artists shifting from the classic YouTube route to sharing their music on social media. And honestly, it’s never been easier (or faster) to stumble upon more new talent.

Since the last covers-themed newsletter, my covers list has been overflowing with so much mind-blowing renditions. Alas, after a tough selection process, here are the covers that are really too good not to share:

I raise a glass for every note
For every distant dream in hope

💡 This Week’s Disc-Coveries

Lately the algorithm’s been feeding me a lot of improv rap and cyphers, and honestly? It’s the BEST thing. Some of my favourite finds so far are from WhatMore’s fire rap verse on Gracie Abram’s That’s So True and a group of street rappers from Legendary Cyphers and @ariathome.

Or maybe you're in the mood for a totally different vibe? This cover artist casually transforms a boyband anthem into something straight out of a Phoebe Bridgers album. I don’t know whether to drop my jaw in amazement or laugh first. 🤣

🎶 New Music This Week

So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings by Caroline Polachek (covered by Squirrel Flower): This version takes a slower, moodier punk rock turn — sort of like a fusion of Fleetwood Mac’s and The Marías’ music styles. I love how this brings a whole new vibe to the original!

Hanging By A Moment by Lifehouse (covered by Slow Pulp): The vibe stays true to the original, but there’s something refreshing about hearing a punk femme / teenage adolescence take on a male-fronted track.

📼 Your Go-To Mixtape

Quarterly Rewind (Q1’2025): Looking for a new song to obsess over? Give your go-to playlists a refresh with these new bops 🎧
