Vol. 39 | Music to wallow your sorrows into
How you doin’,
It’s the middle of the year — how are those New Year grapes kickin’ in for you?
I realized I’ve been putting out pretty positive music recs for a while, so this week, I decided to turn down the happy, romanticized mood and bring the sadder, more heartbreaking songs into the spotlight.
Much like in life, we often try to push the negative thoughts and outcomes of our relationships to the back of our minds. But the truth is, every sad emotion is just as important as the happy ones. And when we sit with our feelings a little longer, that’s when we become most open to transforming our painful state into a better, more healed version of ourselves.
To all the sad, broken, lonely and longing: This one’s for you. 🫂
Cheers,
Val ♫

In this week's setlist:
😭 I Cried, They Crew, We Crode
Sometimes, all it takes is a good guitar strum or a slow piano riff to get in the cry-ey mood. For some, it’s repeating the same sad lyrics over and over again. Whatever it is, you’re in for a melancholic relapse.

😞 It’s Not You, It’s Me
There’s a special kind of ache (and sometimes rage) when someone can’t love you right — not because of you, but because they’re still fighting battles within themselves.
Sometimes we just want to be the bigger person and say it’s okay to settle, but here’s a friendly reminder that if they can’t love you properly, they don’t deserve your love anyway. PERIODT.
Here’s a lineup of tracks channeling those emotionally unavailable exes and their half-baked apologies:
❤️🔥 It’s Always The One That Got Away
If you’re on the other side of the coin and feel like you lost something precious a little too late — well, life has a way of testing us. Sometimes, it teaches us the value of something only after it’s gone.
Life’s too full of new beginnings to cry over spilled milk. There are plenty of fish in the sea, and when you find another precious one, make sure you don’t let it slip away again.
Here are some songs that channel that “It’s Always Been You” energy:
🎼 Lyric of the Week
I wonder what happens when you hear our song
Do you brush it away or do you sing along?
Do you talk about the future the way we did?
Is there room for me in it?
🎶 New Music This Week
Free by Ejae and Andrew Choi: I’m currently in fan mode after watching Netflix’s latest K-Pop Demon Hunters, and this song has got to be one of my favourites! 🥰 Even if you haven’t watched the show yet (I highly recommend you do to get the maximum feels for this song), you’ll hear a lot of 2010s R&B / 1st gen K-pop influences in this track. I’m reminded of Taeyang and G.NA through this song, it’s pure nostalgia 😌
Depressed by Leanboys: I like how calm the vibes are in this song, despite the crisp rap verses and loud bass in the middle. I can imagine myself chilling to this song at night while I’m super planning.
Cold by sign crushes motorist: Sharing another slow guitar riff lullaby for your getting-ready-for-sleep playlist — the tempo and occasional deep hums are enough to reset your nervous system for another day.
